What does the Theater der Klänge stand for?

The Theatre of Sounds is often associated with the Bauhaus stage – and for good reason: since our foundation, we have intensively explored new interpretations of the historic Bauhaus stage in five elaborate productions. These plays have not only been acclaimed by audiences and critics, but have also been enthusiastically received on international tours. We are proud of this, because we are the only contemporary artists’ collective to bring this aspect of German cultural heritage to the stage in such a comprehensive way.

But this is only part of our work: just 17% of our productions to date have been dedicated to this topic. The remaining 83% of our repertoire encompasses a variety of dramatic and musical forms: old theatre forms before opera and text drama, revues, dance theatre, intermedia and interactive dance pieces as well as political theatre.

With our current social media campaign, we invite you to accompany us on a journey through all 29 of our productions. In short video reels, we give you audio-visual insights and show you what the Theatre of Sound stands for. Visit us on Instagram:

Online gallery: art meets dance and video art

Our online gallery is part of the Virtual Theatre, but can also be visited independently of it. We are currently presenting the exhibition ‘Mensch und Kunstfigur im Kugeltheater’, based on our play of the same name.
The works on display are by video artist Yoan Trellu, who has developed fascinating full-dome projections from sketches and drawings by Oskar Schlemmer. These were performed with great success at the Bochum Planetarium and interactively performed by our dancers.

In the exhibition, we are showing some of the best screenshots as well as high-quality photographs of these visual worlds – arranged as stylish circular pictures that are available for purchase. The works, produced on aluminium dibond, combine Schlemmer’s aesthetics with modern video art and dance in a new way.

Details:
– Prices: Orientation towards first works by art academy graduates.
– Support: Every picture sold supports both the Theatre of Sounds and the artist Yoann Trellu. (Tax-deductible donation receipts can be issued)

Artist documentaries on NRW-Vision

At the end of 2023, we had the honour of welcoming the renowned French artists Pedro Pauwels (dancer and choreographer) and Jean-Jacques Lemêtre (theatre musician) to our Düsseldorf rehearsal studio for dance and music sprints. They worked intensively with our teams in 4-day workshops, accompanied by film and sound design students from Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, who documented the events.

In addition to recordings of the workshops, interviews were also conducted with the artists. At the beginning of 2023, the student film team also travelled to Paris to portray the artists at their places of work. This collaboration led to the creation of two artist documentaries in the summer semester of 2023:
Both films were presented at numerous film festivals, especially in France, and are proof of the powerful combination of art, film and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Planned premiere 2025: Heinrich Heine’s Le Grand

An encounter with theatre musician Jean-Jacques Lemêtre – known for over 40 years of work at the world-famous Théâtre du Soleil in Paris – led to an extraordinary new project: ‘Heinrich Heine’s Le Grand’, a piece of music theatre that builds a Franco-German cultural bridge.

The inspiration for the piece comes from Heine’s book ‘Ideas – Le Grand’, in which he describes his first encounter with a Frenchman: the Tambour Le Grand. With drums and a lively performance, he introduced the young Heine to the history of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic campaigns.

Heine wrote:
‘… he taught me modern history. I did not understand the words he spoke, but as he drummed constantly while he spoke, I knew what he wanted to say. Basically, that’s the best teaching method.’

The ensemble for this piece consists of two actors who have been associated with us for many years and who have already impressed in previous productions at the Theatre of Sounds:

– Francesco Russo (LUDUS DANIELIS, Die barocke Maskenbühne, Die Neuberin).
– Mathias Weiland (Die Neuberin, Das Opfer, Gregorius).

Premiere:
– When: 13 to 22 March 2025.
– Where: In the historic ballroom ‘Dä Düsseldorfer Salon’ in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim.

Advance booking are allready available – save the date in your diary now!

A jewel of the Wilhelminian era: Dä Düsseldorfer Salon

The former ballroom of the Landeskliniken Düsseldorf, today known as ‘Dä Düsseldorfer Salon’, is an architectural gem. After more than 25 years in a deep slumber, this ballroom and theatre hall has been preserved in its original condition from 1902, making it the only surviving Wilhelminian-style hall in Düsseldorf.

In October 2024, we revived this extraordinary space with the revival of our production ‘West-Land-Tänze’. Our second major production for this room will follow in March 2025 with the premiere of ‘Heinrich Heine’s Le Grand’. But this is just the beginning: from April 2025, we plan to open the hall regularly to Düsseldorf artists and musicians – whether for performances, concerts or even public balls.

A place for Düsseldorf culture:

Our aim is to turn ‘Dä Düsseldorfer Salon’ into a lively stage for the local cultural scene. The first events will be announced in spring 2025 – stay tuned for more news!
